『Belongings

"Belongings"

Ishiuchi Miyako

It is tough for a woman to exist only as a “mother”.
It is frustrating for a woman to be talked about only as a victim of “Hiroshima”.
It is difficult for a woman to endure being “Frida Kahlo”.

Ishiuchi’s photography frees those women from labels like “mother”, “Hiroshima”, and “Frida Kahlo”, returning them to individual women.
– Ishiuchi Miyako’s “Belongings” by Kasahara Michiko (Chief Curator, Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography)

Ishiuchi Miyako’s Belongings contain a selection of her most recent and well known body of works. Bound within are images from three of her photographic series; Mother’s (2002), ひろしま/hiroshima (2008) and Frida by Ishiuchi (2014), which bring together the most comprehensive collection of published images of her ongoing exploration into the remnants of individuals and our relationship to both time and memory. Included within is an afterward by Kasahara Michiko, Chief Curator of Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography. Text is available both in Japanese and English.
