Kikuji Kawada’s Remote Past a Memoir: 1951－1966 was published in conjunction with the third daikanyama photo fair. This photobook is composed of Kawada’s early works from 1951 to 1956 when Kawada established his own style as a photographer. From the works used as the main visual for this year’s daikanyama photo fair, which is highly regarded by Ihei Kimura and Ken Domon at the monthly contest of camera magazine and serves as a starting point of Kawada’s professional career, to the unpublished works, this photobook presents the Kawada’s distinguished images of turbulent period. Mentioned by Kawada as “it serves notice that not only past memory but future memory is lurking. It is here that you can experience jamais vu and déjà vu. It is like when a pile of photographs raises a real image. It exceeds time and place,” we could find the world of past, present and future memoir at the “Beginning of photography.” Including an afterword by Rei Masuda, Chief curator at The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo.
